The French have always made brilliant contributions to human culture; Impressionism, the writings of Voltaire, and haute cuisine to name a few. Here at Geometric Records, we have own our Gallic genius, electro-pop marvel Jack Cleverly. Jack's creations bubble with crackling drums and flowing synths cradling delicate folk guitar lines, ingenious beds of electronic invention providing the backdrop for disarmingly affecting lyrics that yet never border on twee. Fresh from an appearance at this year's Glastonbury, Jack is set to release his debut single on Geometric, a gem of a record that showcases his raw talent for crafting intelligent pop melodies into choruses so infuriatingly catchy they are guaranteed to imprison your neurons for days at a time. Alex Lloyd (otherwise known as PRDCTV - pronounced "Productive" for the less vowel-phobic amongst you) began his electronaughting days when he enlisted the aid of his younger brother to build a rudimentary sampler from scrap tape recorder parts. Needless to say, his methods have moved on since then, but the aesthetic of his music hasn't; each song is painstakingly sampled and pieced together from Alex's bedroom recording sessions, emerging as fluid patchworks of exquisitely lush, organic folktronica. Branded the "Oxford Don" by XFM DJ and cult icon John Kennedy, Alex has already been turning some pretty big heads - so much so that he's been comissioned to do remixes for artists such as Patrick Wolf, El Guincho and Grasscut, amongst others...you can check them out here. Tim Matthews (a.k.a. Envelope) came into the world of ear-drum friendly music backwards. Studying a course in experimental electronic music, some of Tim's earliest ventures into electronica involved wiring up a shed load of tin cans to summon snarling cacophanies, aptly described as "Dirty Electronics". Since then, Tim's creations have taken on a remarkably different direction. It's rare to hear electronic music with the kind of range and depth of feeling that runs in abundance in his brilliantly self-contradictory debut EP. Both engaging yet accessible, Envelope’s glitchy, ambient IDM flips between euphoria and brooding menace, leaving the listener with a sense of enthralled unease. We're just grateful he gave up on the tin cans... Envelope’s self-titled debut EP is out now on Geometric Records. |
